TeenBuzz Radio Camps: Building Confidence and Connections for Helen Doron Students

teenbuzz radio summer camp

TeenBuzz Radio is a radio station run by Helen Doron English that has been broadcasting since August 2013, with the intent of providing teens a dynamic, fun, and easy way to improve their English language skills. Listeners from all over the world can interact with the radio in a variety of ways, such as our live chat during broadcasts, to participate in quizzes and win prizes. Additionally, high-level students can broadcast live on air through our “Students Speak Out” program, teaching them speak charismatically, confidently, and naturally.

Over the summer, two separate TeenBuzz Radio Summer Camps occurred in Albania and Czechia. Students arrived at the camp with the hope that they would acquire knowledge about radio broadcasting, and their fair share of nervousness about broadcasting their thoughts to a wide audience.

“I was kind of nervous and scared before the camp… I don’t really like meeting new people” wrote Maja, a student who was present at the camp in Sleszka Harta, a sunny lake in the middle of Czechia where the second summer camp took place.

She continued: “But when I came, everything was ok. Everyone was so nice, we became friends and stayed in contact even after the camp ended. I’m glad I had the opportunity to meet them”.

Helen Doron students from 6 countries took part in the camp, leading to a week of interacting with diverse cultures. Throughout the learning process, students bonded, becoming a close-knit group and cementing friendships that persist even after the camps have ended. Among other activities, students participated in team sports, went kayaking on lakes, went to an English-language escape room, and even held a dance party for parents and friends of the students.

The main idea behind the camp was for students to learn how to broadcast on the radio, including teaching them about the history of radio, the technical knowledge required to run a radio station, how to speak clearly, techniques for interviewing guests, and more. All of this comes with a broader set of skills that they can apply throughout their life – confidence, ability to improvise, public speaking, and more.

“I learned a lot of things besides how to do radio. I gained the confidence to face my fears and be present in the moment, as well as step outside of my comfort zone” shared Maja. “The camp gave me the confidence I needed to speak my mind, and made me less afraid of making mistakes”

Maja ended with a strong statement: “It was one of the best weeks of my life”.

Thanks to the wonderful feedback given to us by the students, teachers, parents, and franchisees, we plan on recreating this experience in the future. By repeating this with new generations of Helen Doron students, we can continue to fulfill our mission of teaching them to speak charismatically, confidently, and naturally, creating well-rounded students and nurturing their personal development.
