When dozens of bright young voices filled the room at our Budapest centre, it was clear: something extraordinary was unfolding. For the second year running, Helen Doron English Hungary held the “It’s Always Debateable” National finals, an event that transforms shy teens into confident English speakers, critical thinkers and poised public performers.
Following the successful International Round held in 2024, participant numbers have increased in 2025. 67 young competitors from ten Learning Centres nationwide participated in the Local Rounds. Of these, 11 advanced to the National Final.
These competitors didn’t arrive as seasoned debaters. They graduated from our signature It’s Always Debatable course, where students learn the art of debating in English. They develop public speaking skills, critical thinking, and the ability to structure thoughts and ideas and analyse them in a logical pattern. During the course, they debate various topics, champion their views, test fresh arguments, and support classmates with genuine respect.
Graduates who participate in the tournament expand their skillset, as they learn how to compete, and that winning isn’t just about the final trophy. Tournament competitors hone quick decision-making skills, listening actively and responding under pressure.
Watching participants light up as they find their “debating voice” is truly a magnificent sight. These young competitors learn to think on their feet, weigh multiple perspectives, and find the right words in English—abilities that translate to stronger schoolwork, university applications, and future careers.
Behind every student was a team of dedicated teachers and franchisees, cheering them on and ensuring the event ran like clockwork. Parents looked on in awe as their children tackled challenging topics with poise, and many said they’d never imagined English could feel so alive.

Our judging panel combined seasoned trainers and rising stars:
- Pamela Athwani, renowned teacher-trainer and returning judge from the 2024 International Final
- Samuel Hornyak, one of Hungary’s two finalists at last year’s International Round
- Judit Varga, franchisee of South Pest 01 Learning Centre
- Edit Baross, franchisee of Szigetszentmiklós Learning Centre
Their expert feedback guided each student to greater confidence and clarity.
In the under-14 category, eleven debaters delivered compelling arguments—congratulations to 12-year-old Andrea Gerhardt for claiming the top spot. In the over-14 group, six competitors went head-to-head until 15-year-old Vanda Varga emerged victorious. Beyond medals, what impressed everyone was the empathy and emotional intelligence students displayed: listening respectfully, adapting arguments on the fly and celebrating one another’s successes.

We are incredibly proud of each participant and deeply grateful to every teacher, franchisee, and parent who supported them. This event has left a lasting mark, and we can’t wait to make it an annual tradition.
